About Me and This Blog

The ever-evolving blog.  This blog is 7 years old and the first 5 years you will find a lot of the information below.  Currently, I am pretty stabilized on medication.  It’s been almost 3 years since a hospitalization. I’ve completed a year long DBT program.  I’ve live out on my own for a year now, first year in student housing.  Now in a duplex with roommates  I’m pursuing a double major at a local university about 45 minutes from where my family lives  With these changes, I anticipate bumps in the mental health.  Right now my mental health issues are pretty stable.  I’m working on transitioning to male, I’m on estrogen reducers right now and should be starting testosterone in a month.  My new preferred name is Ty and hence the change in the name of the blog

I struggle with a lot of mental health issues most notably Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), anxiety, and depression.  I also struggle with psychosis, which is currently managed by medication but there are plenty of posts on it.  Been diagnosed with everything in the book, by the book I mean the DSM (the psychiatrists book to diagnosis mental disorders) been on over 40 different medications starting at age 10, been in and out of inpatient hospital settings, out patient programs, classes, groups, workshops, therapy, ECT (shock therapy) and surgery (VNS). There isn’t much I haven’t tried to “get better.” This blog will be about getting better (at least hopefully) and my triumphs and trials. If you want to see a password protected post, e-mail (mm172001@hotmail.com) or comment and I’ll review the post and let you know.

My current diagnoses are Schizoaffective Disorder-Bipolar type and Borderline Personality Disorder. PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)

You will see many things on this blog from current updates, mental health struggles current and past,  mental health resources, LGBT content, jokes, background info on me, my evolution over time, cute pictures of my sister’s dogs, and all kinds of other stuff.

I’ve been reading your blog for about the last half hour and have really enjoyed getting to know you. We’ve been through a lot of the same things and experiences. It really helped me get to know you and not feel so isolated that other people have had the same things happen to them.

Thank you for stopping by my blog yesterday. I’ve subscribed to yours so I won’t miss it.

  15. Loving Language May 13, 2013 at 8:06 PM #

Hi! Thanks for coming by my blog. I hope you continue to enjoy my musings on language. I noticed in your description that you have credits in language. What language(s)? How did you get interested in language?

    • mm172001 May 13, 2013 at 8:23 PM #

I have learned 3 languages (so far) other than my native English. I took 4 years of Spanish in high school. Have 22 units in Sign Language studies which include 4 semesters of American Sign Language. I have 8 units of Italian, so far which is 2 semesters. I will continue learning Italian for two more semesters, which is as far as our community college system goes. I read Spanish on a regular basis to keep my knowledge and converse with native speakers a few times a month. I’m teaching some ASL to my sister, and enjoy watching YouTube videos. If I am ever at an event with an interpreter (and you’d be surprised how many, when you look) I watch them sign as I listen to what’s going on to learn new signs and keep my knowledge up. Since I’m still semi-early in my Italian learning, I listen to music in Italian and do exercise on a language site called Duo Lingo, besides going to class twice a week.
I’ve been interested in languages since high school. I like to understand things well, and find knowing multiple languages gives you clearer meaning then some translations, both in academic settings and personal interaction. And the culture, linguistics, and diversity of languages draws me in.
I next plan on learning French or German.

If you enjoy reading there is an excellent book called Babel No More by Michael Erard. It is about hyperpolygots or those who speak and understand multiple languages. The author goes back to myths from earlier days, travels the world to meet hyperpolygots, and interviews them on how they learn and such.

  18. Soul Survivor July 22, 2013 at 9:47 AM #

Hi Marci, I’ve been reading your responses on Lulu’s blog and I’m so impressed with your honesty and insight. I’m doing a series of interviews on my blog called “Breaking the Silence of Stigma,” and I would love to have you contribute, if you would like to and can. Here’s how it works: we select a Wednesday when your interview would be published (using your blog “handle” or any other name you’d like). I send you the interview questions, which are just a general guide. You can look through the interviews that have appeared so far, and see that they range from “just” answering the questions, to an open letter from a mom who lost her daughter to suicide. So you decide how you want to use the questions, or not use them, to express what you want to express about the experience of having a mental illness and whether stigma has influenced how you live your life. Then you send me back your interview and I format it for WP and set it up to publish on that Wednesday. Can you please email me at moxadox at gmail dot com and let me know if you’re interested? Thanks! Laura

Thank you for your honesty. I really appreciate hearing of your successes. My son turned 18 a few months ago. He is in a psyhiatric ward and has been since this past Sunday. The initial diagnosis is psychosis NOS. He had been depressed and just began to show signs of hope. Just a few weeks went by and the psychotic episodes began. I want to educate myself to be his best advocate. He is a very good student as you are. He is unsure of his sexuality and being accepted in current society. I would like to continue to read your posts as you have given me hope for my son’s future

    • mm172001 November 28, 2013 at 6:13 AM #

I am delighted that you have found my page and have found it helpful. It is awesome that you are taking the time and energy to learn as much as you can to be an advocate, it is very important to have someone on our side as we are sometimes not able to see things clearly ourselves or have the ability to take action. Here are a couple pieces of advice, people heal and recover on their own terms generally- there needs to be some push and encouragement but adding too many or unrealistic expectations can really mess things up. It’s a constant assessment of trying to figure out what is possible and wanted and what can be or should be put aside, both for you and your son. For example, it took me about 3 semesters at college to learn I could not take more than 9 units or it would be stressful and I’d likely drop all my classes. Dropping all my classes was also not helpful because then I had no motivation or reason to get up in the morning. The online community, if you find the right one can be very accepting and supportive with different things, especially in regards to sexuality and mental illness. Again, I wish you and your son the best and think it is so great that you are out there educating yourself to help him!!
