NAMI article on the DSM-5

7 Aug

This is an article from NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) about revisions to the DSM (Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) meaning the book that contains the criteria to diagnose certain disorders.  The article has some interesting points I’ll name here and the link at the bottom for further reference if interested.

  • The new manual will do away with the axis system, and instead be groped by 20 similarly typed disorders.  I think this is good, the other day I was trying to explain the axis system to my sister and she couldn’t get it and it was hard to explain.  Also interestingly my current diagnosis Schizoaffective Disorder would fall into the category Schizophrenia and psychotic spectrum disorders.
  • Another change (and contraversioal) is the elimination of Aspergers and it to be placed into Autistic Spectrum Disorder.  This may resort in fewer diagnosis the article also mentions.
  • Another change will be to the personality disorder category eliminating Schizoid, Paranoid, Histrionic and Dependent personality disorder.  this is their reasoning:  “Researchers feel that people in these categories rarely needed professional help and that many of their symptoms could be better described by the remaining personality disorders”
