DBT Skills in real life

24 Feb

I broke up with my girlfriend today, or she broke up with me, or I’m not really sure but it’s over.  Like I had projected I was okay with it.  That would surprise most people because people with BPD are known for their anger, intense interpersonal relationships, manipulation, and fearing people leaving.  I also got a chance to practice some of the DBT Skills with it.  I did the “How” skills which are part of mindfulness, specifically they are non-judgmentally, one-mindfully, and effectively.  I also used distraction with activities and self-soothing with the senses both of which are distress tolerance skills.  Since how skills were my homework this week I filled out the attached sheet and that explains them.  The activities was messaging a friend and the self soothing was taking a bubble bath.

how

I’m proud to say that they worked good with me not over reacting or getting very emotional.

Good on you for using the DBT skills so productively.
I’m glad you’re feeling ok about the breakup but still sorry you’ve had to experience that loss.
