DBT: Aversive Strategies

4 Feb

Aversive strategies in interpersonal relationships:
1. Discounting. “your needs/feelings are not important”
2.Withdrawing/Abandoning. “Do what I want or I’m leaving”
3. Threatening. “Do what I want or I’ll hurt you/myself” (doesn’t always mean physical)
4. Blaming. “It’s your fault this is happening.”
5. Belittling/Denigrating. “What you want is stupid”
6. Guilt-tripping. “If you can’t do this then something must be wrong.”
7. Derailing. “I don’t care what you want, right now I’m feeling hurt”
8. Taking Away. “You won’t do this for me so I don’t wan to go out with you tonight.”

I'l love to hear your thoughts
