DBT Year Long class

21 Jan

I had my first night of the year long DBT Class last night and boy was it intense, and I even have background knowledge of DBT.  First we were asked to sign a contract about our behavior.  We were also given a small packet that had goals, explained the diary cards, an example of diary cards, explanation of a chain analysis for behavior, an example of a chain analysis for behavior, and a blank sheet to do our own chain analysis of behavior.  Our homework is to do a chain analysis of a problem behavior and to fill out our diary cards.  The chain analysis is very long and in dept and when I do that homework assignment for the week I will post and explain.  I have never learned or heard of chain analysis before.

The DBT class Goals:

  • General Goal: To learn and refine skills in changing behavioral, emotional, and thinking patterns associated with problems in living, that is, those causing misery and distress.
  • Specific Goals:
  1. Behaviors to decrease: interpersonal chaos, labile emotions/moods, impulsiveness, and confusion about           self/cognitive dysregulation.
  2. Behaviors to increase: core mindfulness skills, distress tolerance skills, emotion regulation skills, and interpersonal effectiveness skills.

Here is a scan on the diary cards they are a double sided regular sheet of paper if anyone wants to print them and work on them on their own.

It sounds like you are continuing to progress toward your goals

A few months ago I attended a two-week residential program that is DBT-centered. The program is only for women with trauma and trauma-related issues, so they also tailor it to our unique needs. I’d taken weekly DBT classes before, but this program really opened my eyes to how effective these skills can truly be. It was life-changing. I was supposed to do another weekly class after that program, but when my therapist terminated, I was no longer eligible (you need a T to be in the program). Maybe in the future though. Good luck! It will probably be tough work, but absolutely worth it 🙂

There are some crazy rules for this DBT group and one is you must have a therapist so I see that. I know DBT but having the constant reminder each week will help me practice the skills.
